The Ultimate Guide to Molokini Crater Snorkeling with Kai Kanani
When a snorkeling adventure is what you are considering adding to your next vacation itinerary, don’t leave the destination to chance. Instead, consider letting the professional team at Kai Kanani take you on an unforgettable cruise to the Molokini Crater. We are well known for our Maui snorkeling tours that offer much more than just a boat ride. From the moment you step on board, you will experience a journey that creates memories of a lifetime.
History of Molokini Crater
Formed by a volcanic eruption over 200,000 years ago, Molokini Crater has had a long and interesting history. For decades, the crater served Hawaiians as a popular fishing destination. During World War II, American military pilots used the Molokini area as a place to practice bombing, resulting in considerable damage to the crater’s coral reefs. From 1977 to the present day, Molokini Crater and the seventy-seven acres surrounding it is designated by the US government as a Marine Life Conservation District and Bird Sanctuary. With its health in better condition, Molokini has once again become home to a thriving fish population, sea turtles, whales, and more than two hundred bird species.
With all the natural beauty and clear water, it is no wonder the district has become a destination for snorkeling and scuba diving enthusiasts.
Kai Kanani’s Signature Deluxe Molokini Snorkeling Tour
Our family-owned business has been cruising the waters of South Maui, Wailea, and Makena for over 30 years. This means we know what it takes to create the type of tour that satisfies the expectations of all ages. When you want to experience all that Molokini Crater has to offer, consider including in your next visit to Maui our Signature Deluxe Molokini Snorkeling Tour aboard the Kai Kanai II catamaran in your next visit to Maui. With our premier location not available to other tours, we make the short journey to the beautiful South Maui crater, where guests have the area all to themselves for a quiet and relaxing time before the crowds arrive. Designed for all ages, the tour departs at 9:45 a.m. each day for an amazing 3.5-hour adventure.
Beach Loading – What to Expect
Before loading, be prepared by wearing your favorite swimwear, since you will get wet. You’ll remove your shoes (flip-flops, sandals, etc.) and place these, along with a towel and a set of dry clothes, in a waterproof bag to bring along to use once you are onboard. You will also want to protect any gadgets, such as your phone and camera, in a waterproof bag.
Once you arrive in Makena, you’ll go to Maluaka Beach, where you’ll walk the short distance across the sand to where the 65-foot catamaran awaits at the shoreline. From there, our crew will explain the boarding process. This means walking through the water, which could be low or high, to the boat’s ladder where you will hold on to the handrails and climb aboard. The crew is ready to help anyone who needs assistance getting to, up, and on the boat. Safety is our primary goal as we begin the day. Once onboard, feel free to put on your shoes and sit back and relax.
If you are staying at one of the participating Wailea Resorts, our shuttle service is available to get you to Maluaka Beach and our check-in station. When the tour is over, the service is also available to return you to your resort.
Deluxe Tour Benefits
When booking our Signature Deluxe Snorkel tour, you will experience double the fun and excitement. The tour includes not one, but two locations for snorkeling. When we head out in the morning on the way to Molokini, you’ll enjoy the blue skies and morning sunlight as you prepare for arrival at the crystal-blue waters, where visibility allows you to see the reef and the many types of marine life inhabiting the area. Our second location takes guests to the Makena Coast, where beaches are abundant. Here, in the still, crystal-clear waters, you can share swim time with the Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle.
With all the cruising, snorkeling, and swimming, there is no doubt you will work up an appetite. Not to worry. On our tours, we aim to please the palate with food and drink. On our deluxe tour, enjoy flavorful and tasty tidbits from local sources for your gourmet lunch prepared by the Spoon & Key Market. Guests will also work up a thirst for something refreshing to drink with so many opportunities to swim and snorkel. We take care of this, too, with our open bar. Take your pick from an assortment of wine, spirits, and local beers while relaxing and taking in the views.
