Kai | Can I Wear Jewelry While Snorkeling?

Snorkeling with Kai Kanani is an unforgettable experience, in part because our primary destination is the Molokini Crater. The crescent-shaped top of the Molokini Crater rises from the seabed, poking above the water’s surface and attracting a variety of sea life that makes it the perfect snorkeling destination.

Of course, we want your snorkeling adventure to be memorable for all the right reasons, so we recommend following the abundance of caution approach by removing all jewelry or choosing jewelry appropriate for the morning’s activities. Removing jewelry when snorkeling ensures convenience, safety, and potential damage to your equipment or valuables. Let’s look at each in turn.

Experienced divers and snorkelers recognize the importance of wearing your mask comfortably while putting it on and removing it easily. Depending on the size and location, nose rings or other jewelry can interfere with gaining the proper mask seal or cause discomfort while wearing the mask. Likewise, the strap that encircles your head and keeps your mask in place can easily dislodge or tug on earrings, especially non-stud earrings. To avoid these problems, you are best off leaving those jewelry items at home or your hotel.

Unfortunately, wearing jewelry can be dangerous to yourself and sea life. The standard diet of most ocean animals is other sea life, some of which are shiny and silver. Shiny, silver objects, such as jewelry, can flash in the sun and attract many sea creatures looking for a meal. Barracudas are predatory fish attracted to rocky outcrops like the Molokini Crater. They also feed on silver-colored fish, so removing shiny objects from your person helps avoid encounters with confused barracudas.

In addition, wearing jewelry with sharp edges presents the risk of accidentally striking a marine animal or having it get caught on your gear or other objects. Rings sometimes have sharp edges that can damage gloves or other gear, despite some snorkelers following the recommendation to turn the ring setting and stone to the inside of your hand. Also, you should avoid wearing long necklaces while snorkeling. You can easily remove long necklaces and prevent them from getting entangled in your gear and snapping off.

A final reason to avoid wearing jewelry while swimming in the ocean is to avoid losing valuables. Rings or other jewelry that slip off in the sea are unlikely to be recovered, even if you notice the moment they are lost. Seawater also contains salt, which can have a corrosive effect on some settings, especially those in a weakened state you may not recognize. Even if you do not lose your jewelry while snorkeling, the seawater’s effect can contribute to losing a stone or other valuable at a later date.

The team at the family-owned Kai Kanani looks forward to hosting you on a snorkeling adventure from our catamaran. Helping you enjoy Maui’s beautiful sights and the marine life at the Molokini Crater is the reason our business exists. You will have your best snorkeling experience by avoiding the potential loss of valuables and the potential for harm, however small.
